Dedicated to the memory of Jonathan Rogers 'Benny'

Jonathan Rogers—known to many of us as “Benny”. Benny was a person of many gifts and talents. His passions were vast, ranging from photography and cameras to astronomy, vintage radios, cycling, and computers, each pursued with expertise and childlike glee - especially when he fixed something he thought unfixable! Above all, Benny’s greatest joy and unwavering commitment was to his family. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to providing for us, ensuring we had every opportunity to thrive, even if that meant countless late nights or long hours as a telecommunications engineer, often travelling overnight to various coastal locations to make vital repairs to lifesaving Coastguard equipment. He worked tirelessly, not for accolades or recognition, but because he believed it was his purpose to give us everything he could.

Benny had a personality like no other—humble, clever, and immensely funny. With his quick wit and dry one liners, he could bring a smile or a laugh to any occasion.

One of the things that defined Benny was his love for exploring the world around him, whether through the lens of a camera or on his bike. He saw beauty in places others might overlook, and he took countless photos of landscapes, a favourite being the tree along Ounty Johns Lane, which he captured time and time again on different cameras and lenses bringing a different feel to the image each time. He delighted in taking old cameras apart and marvelling at how things worked. Whether cycling down a quiet country road or gazing at the stars through his telescope, he had a way of bringing his passions to life and sharing them with us, filling our lives with new memories and inspiring us to see the world through his unique lens.
But what stands out most in our hearts is Benny’s gentle, steady presence. No matter what life threw at him or at us, he was always there—patient, wise, and unfailingly kind. His love for us was always evident in everything he did. We will miss him every single day.

Thoughts

A wonderful, clever, unassuming, gentle giant of a man, who was always willing to help when needed - this is how I will always remember Benny. In me case patience was another of his attributes, especially when trying to educate me in the workings of my tablet, although he didn't apply for the job, over the years Benny became my personal technology adviser. I could not have wished for better brother-in-law, who will be missed with great sadness and love.

It is clear from the touching tributes that Benny was a much loved person by both family and friends. I always knew him as Barn's Dad and have one overriding memory of him from when Barn and I were teenage rugby players. Benny elected to drive us down to Looe for a rugby tour which was kind enough in itself . He also required great patience to endure the constant conversation, mainly from me. Barn later told me that he was curious as to why I had an infatuation with one word in particular which I can't mention in this tribute. I would like to offer my deepest condolences to Barnaby, Martha, Jessica, Wendy and Amelie.

Benny - a quiet, gentle giant with the kindest heart and the deepest laugh. I remember linking arms with him while he walked me and my sister, Jane, back home every Thursday night from the Royal Exchange when I was only 16. He made sure that we got back to Western Road safely - a true gentleman who will be sadly missed. My thoughts are with you Wendy, and all the family.
